  Dear John,

I’m so glad to know that you are coming to Beijing. It so happens that my brother will be away on business through 18 — 24, so you can stay with us if you like. I’ve made a 5-day schedule for you: the Great Wall (on 18, Day 1), Beihai Park and my school (Day 2), the Summer Palace (Day 3), the Forbidden City and the Tian’anmen Square (Day 4). Nothing special is planned for Day 5. You can do some shopping or something else. Please tell me the date of your arrival and your flight number so I can meet you at the airport.

I’m looking forward to seeing you in Beijing.

  One possible version:

Three years ago I failed an important exam in my life and became a student in an ordinary school. Disappointed as I felt at the shabby campus and the poorlyequipped classroom, I found the teachers patient and considerate. Besides, I enjoyed the friendly atmosphere in class. I decided to make the best of it. I worked hard and got along well with my teachers and classmates. Whenever I had difficulties, they were always available. Soon, I became one of the top students in my class, which greatly increased my confidence and got me motivated.

My experience tells me that it is not what you are given but how you make use of it that determines who you are.

  Dear Mr. Zhang,

  【参考范文】

  Dear Mr. Zhang,

We have held a discussion about whether it is good or not for a top student to share a desk with a slower student.

Some are for the idea. As they know, everyone has strengths as well as weaknesses. Although they are not good at lessons, they might do well in other fields like sports or arts. Therefore, they can learn from each other, and they may develop friendship. In addition, top students can help slower ones gain self-confidence by helping them with their lessons, which benefits them all.

However, others don’t hold the same view. They think some slower students are always making trouble, such as keeping talking in class, breaking school rules, which may lead to them forming bad habits. Besides, slower students often ask top students questions,

which has a bad effect on their studies.

In my opinion, I’d like to choose to share a desk with a slower student so that we can learn from each other and make progress together.

  Yours,

  Li Ping

  Dear Rick,

I'm glad you are interested in our LearnfromLei Feng Groups.First of all,you might need to know who Lei Feng is.Born in Wangcheng,Hunan,Lei Feng lived a short life of only 22 years. As a soldier in the People's Liberation Army,he worked hard and was always ready to help others. He did countless good deeds in his short life and has been regarded all the time as a national hero and moral model for every citizen.

There are lots of LearnfromLei Feng Groups in China's middle schools, all of which are formed voluntarily and are usually small in size:in threes or fours, helping out in homes for the elderly, and so on.

I believe such activities are of great value in educating the people and building a harmonious society.
