In the 60s, people asked about your astrological (about star) sign. In the 90s, they want to know your website.

  36

Your website is an electronic meeting place for your family, friends and potentially, millions of people around the world. Best of all, you may not have to spend a cent. The Web is filled with all kinds of free services and all it takes is some time and creativity.

  37

Like the table of contents of a book or magazine, the home page is the front door. Your site can have one or more pages, depending on how you design it.

While web pages vary greatly in their design and content, most use a traditional magazine layout(版面设计). At the top of the page is a banner(横幅)GRAPHIC. Next comes a greeting and short description of the site. Pictures, text, and links to other websites follow.

  38

Think about whom the site is for and what you want to say. Next, gather up the material that you want to put on the site.

While there are no rules you have to follow, there are a few things to keep in mind:

  39

If you want too much at the beginning, you may never get the site off the ground. You can always add to your site.

Less is better. Most people don’t like to read a lot of long texts online.

  40

Smaller is better. Since it can take a long time to download large files, keep the file sizes small.

Have the rights. Don’t put any material on your site unless you are sure you can do it legally. Always remember to get the permission from the writer first.

Now it’s time to roll up your sleeves and start building.

  A. Start simply.

  B. Break it into small pieces.

  C. Draw a rough layout on a sheet of paper.

  D. Many websites are considered very interesting.

  E. Before you start building your site, do some planning.

  F. Think of your home page as the starting point of your website.

  G. These days, having a web address is almost as important as a street address.

Having bad feeling about world? “Cheer up.” says science writer Matt Ridley. “The world has never been a better place to live in, and it will keep on getting better both for humans and for nature.”

  36

  1 )

  37

It is reported that there are more than ten billion different products for sale in London alone. Even allowing for the many people who still live in poverty, our own generation has access to more nutritious food, more convenient transport, bigger houses, and better cars.

  38

This will continue as long as we use these things to make other things. The more we specialize and exchange, the better off we'll be.

  2)Brilliant advances

One reason we are richer, healthier, taller, cleverer, longer lived and freer than ever before is that the four most basic human needs—food, clothing, fuel and shelter—have grown a lot cheaper. Take one example. In 1800 a candle providing one hour's light cost six hours' work. In the 1880s the same light from an oil lamp took 15 minutes' work to pay for.

  39

  Today it's half second.

3 )Let's not kill ourselves for climate change

  40

A child that dies from indoor smoke in a village, where the use of fossil-fuel (化石燃料) electricity is forbidden by well-meaning members of green political movements trying to save the world, is just as great a tragedy as a child that dies in a flood caused by climate change. If climate change proves to be mild, but cutting carbon causes real pain, we may well find that we have stopped a nose-bleed by putting a tourniquet (止血带) around our necks.

Ridley calls himself a rational optimist—rational, because he's carefully weighed the evidence.

Overreaction to climate change could prove just as damaging to human welfare as climate change itself.

  Shopping fuels invention.

And, of course, we earn more pounds and dollars than any who lived before us.

In 1950 it was eight seconds.

It’s high time that we took immediate action to fight climate change.

Here's how he explains his views.

What do the world’s most successful people all have in common?

By examining the work habits of over 150 greatest writers and artists and scientists, the researchers including Standford Professor Jeffrey Preffer found that high achievers like Robert Moses turn out to be all alike: Busy ! Busy!

  36

In a study of general managers in industry, John Kotter reported that many of them worked 60 to 65 hours per week—which translates into at least six 10-hour days. The ability and willingness to work difficult and tiring hours has characterized many powerful figures. Energy and strength provide many advantages to those seeking to build power.

  Just Say No!

The difference between successful people and very successful people is that very successful people say “no” to almost everything. And that’s what gives them the time to accomplish so much.

  37

And focus means saying “no” to a lot of distractions(分神).

  Know What You Are!

Ignore your weakness and keep improving your strengths. Don’t waste time exploring skill areas where you have little competence. Instead, focus on—and build on—your strengths.

  38

  .

  Create Good Luck!

Luck is not magical—there is a science to it. Richard Wiseman studied lucky people for his book Luck Factor, and broke down what they do right.

  39

By being more outgoing, open to new ideas, following the feeling that something is true, being optimistic, lucky people create possibilities.

Does applying these principles to your life actually work? Wiseman created a “luck school” to test the ideas—and it was a success. In total, 80 percent of people who attended Luck School said that their luck had increased.

  40

  .

  A. Spend enough time to improve your weakness.

  B. Achievement requires focus.

  C. On average, these people reported that their luck had increased by more than 40 percent.

  D. High achievers never stop working and they never lose a minute.

  E. Busy people are more likely to be lucky.

  F. This means knowing who you are, what you are and what you are good at.

  G. Certain personality types are luckier because they behave in a way that offers the chance for good opportunities.

For people with thousands of pages to read, speed reading seems like manna (甘露) from heaven. In addition, speed reading helps lighten the load of information you have to absorb since it provides a filter that you can use in screening all bits of information before you approach it.

  36

Examining how much information you need will help you identify how you should read a certain document to maximize your learning and comprehension. Thorough reading may no longer be necessary in some cases, such as when you only need an outline of a certain document.

Another skill that can ease the burden of a reader is the ability to read words in blocks. Make sure you do not spend too long on a certain block.

  37

This will also make reading less tiresome and boring.

To master this important skill, you have to practice reading more and more words in a certain block at a time. A suggestion shared by some experts regarding this step is to increase the distance between you and the document you are reading. If you can read more and more words in one block, you can cut down on the time it usually takes you to read a certain text and you will be able to read more in a shorter period.

Readers should also practice reducing the number of times they go back to previous sections or blocks. Using a pointer such as the tip of a pencil or pen can also help to make the flow of your reading smoother and faster.

  38

Thus, your speed in reading will largely depend on the speed of the movement of your pointer.

If you still find yourself confused about the topic even after you have finished reading the document, do not re-read right away. Re-reading immediately will just lead to slower speed in reading.

  39

Getting your own reading corner will also help.

  40

Continue practicing and practicing the techniques aforementioned and soon, you'll achieve the reading speed that will work best for you.

A.In this technique, your eyes will follow the tip of the pointer.

B.This saves time and reduces the effort that you have to make.

C.Taking a short break first is recommended before reading the material again.

D.As a final note, the most important point is consistent and deliberate practice.

E.Your invaluable time can be saved if you can have your reading speed doubled.

F.The first step to increase your reading speed is to identify the specific information you need.

G.Reducing the time you spend on a specific number of words in a block will make no big difference.
