IHOP, one of America’s favorite restaurants for breakfast, lunch and dinner, has announced plans to serve millions of free pancakes in celebration of National Pancake Day on February 24, 2024. The celebration is designed to bring together friends and family, as well as to raise $1 million for Children’s Miracle Network, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping children’s hospitals, and other worthy causes.

2024 will mark IHOP’s sixth year of celebrating the national event, and nearly 1,400 IHOP restaurants throughout the United States will once again invite guests to enjoy IHOP’s free buttermilk pancakes from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. In return, IHOP guests are asked to donate what they would pay for the free pancakes, or more, to their local children’s hospital or another worthy cause. Additionally, Miracle Balloons will be sold for $1 each, displayed at participating IHOP restaurants from February 1 through February 24, 2024, offering guests another way to show their support of Children’s Miracle Network and contribute to the National Pancake Day fundraising effort.

Known also as Fat Tuesday, National Pancake Day dates back several centuries to when the English prepared for the food restrictions of Lent (大斋节). Strict rules prohibited the eating of all dairy products (乳制品) during Lent, so pancakes were made to use up the supply of milk, butter and other dairy products.

Since the first National Pancake Day in 2007, IHOP has raised nearly $2 million to support charities in communities in which it operates. Last year, IHOP gave away more than 1.5 million pancakes and raised over $875,000 in support of Children’s Miracle Network and other local charities, far exceeding its goal to raise $750,000.

Directions: Read the following passage. Fill in the numbered blanks by using the information from the passage.

Write NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS for each answer.

Why are some people so successful in reaching their goals? Research on achievement suggests that successful people reach their goals not simply because of who they are, but more often because of what they do. Here are some ways successful people achieve their goals.

When you set yourself a goal, try to be as specific as possible. “Lose 5 pounds” is a better goal than “lose some weight”, because it gives you a clear idea of what success looks like. Knowing exactly what you want to achieve keeps you motivated until you get there.

Also, think about the specific actions that need to be taken to reach your goal. Just promising you’ll “sleep more” is too vague—be clear and precise. “I’ll be in bed by 10 p.m. on weeknights” leaves no room for doubt about what you need to do.

Meanwhile, you should be a realistic optimist when you are setting a goal. By all means engage in lots of positive thinking about achieving it. Believing in your ability to succeed is particularly helpful for creating and maintaining your motivation.

But whatever you do, don’t underestimate(低估) how difficult it will be to reach your goal. Studies show that thinking things will come to you easily and effortlessly leaves you ill-prepared for the journey ahead, and significantly increases the possibility of failure.

Willpower is another important factor. To build willpower, take on a challenge that requires you to do something you’d honestly rather not do, such as giving up high-fat snacks, or doing 100 sit-ups a day, which will develop your determination to reach your goals.

You may start with just one activity, and make a plan for how you will deal with troubles when they occur. It will be hard in the beginning, but it will get easier, and that’s the whole point. As your strength grows, you can take on more challenges.

Remember, you don’t need to become a different person to be successful. It’s never what you are, but what you do. Ways to 41.____________________________________ Ⅰ. Be as specific as possible ● Set a specific goal:

Sometimes you wish to be left alone. Sometimes you love to travel alone. Though most of my friends don’t agree with the idea, it has always been an incredible experience for me to measure the miles of road alone. Exploring new places makes me more creative, as I start improving in the pictures I paint and poems I write.

Going out with friends on long holidays suited my teenage years. Today, I am equally passionate about holidaying, but in a different way. Interestingly, I have learnt a lot of new things that allow me to entertain my life in a better way. Recently, I got a chance to visit a hill station alone and took my new digital camera with me. While I was capturing the scenic beauty of the place, a professional photographer moved to me and shared some great tips for improving my photography skills. Some of the images I clicked have become famous among my friends on a social networking website. I become more open to chat with unknown fellow travelers. It is a great opportunity to become more social in nature, when you are all alone at a new place. You have more choices for food and drinks and the best part is that you are saved from sharing the menu card with your friends.

For me, traveling alone brings a different aspect. Just imagine holding a glass of your favorite brandy and watching the stars twinkling above the ocean, shining at its fullest glory. A big wow and you are reintroduced to yourself.

If you ever get an opportunity to visit a place alone, missing it is like tearing off a special chapter of your life. Believe me! It is no less than a hunt for treasured moments of lifetime. 51. How did the author usually travel in the past? (No more than 8 words)
