Corinthians defeated Coritiba Saturday evening 2-0 in the fifth round of the Brazilian soccer championship, local media said on Sunday. Beating Coritiba, Corinthians forgot about the Brazilian Cup and focused on re-establishing themselves in the Brazilian Championship, avoiding any early problems in the tournament.
Corinthians' head coach, Mano Menezes, was without Ronaldo, Jorge Henrique and William. Nevertheless, the team corralled together to produce a positive result in front of their home crowd.
The first goal came in the 45th minute when Alessandro crossed the ball to a cutting Souza who was able to tap it in at the far side of the goal post.
In the 55th minute, Wellington Saci crossed the ball towards the front of the net where he found a wide-open Douglas who headed the ball in.
The win on Saturday temporarily puts Corinthians in sixth place with seven points. However, the team will have to wait to see the results of the rest of the fifth round before celebrating their jump in the standings and relief from the danger zone of the last four standings.
