  Most people who fly on passenger planes in the United States do not lose their luggage.Even if the luggage is lost,usually it is only delayed.Most “lost” luggage is found in a few days.Airlines search for the owners of unclaimed bags for up to three months.But when the owners cannot be found or the bags are not claimed,they are sold to a store in the small city of Scottsboro,in the southern state of Alabama.

  About one-half of one percent of all luggage passing through US airports is unclaimed.Many of the missing bags,and what is in them,are sold at the Unclaimed Baggage Centre.Seven thousand items arrive at the store every day.

  Tom Barnes,who was shopping at the store said,“I can go into any of the large shopping centres,like the international malls.I can walk through there for an hour and come out with three items.But I come in to this store,and then I come out with my car full of stuff.”

  Brenda Cantrell,who works at the store,said,“The Unclaimed Baggage Centre is the only store in America that buys and resells unclaimed baggage from the airline industry.You would be surprised at all the jackets,Kindles,iPads and,you know,all kinds of expensive electronics.”

  The store says it once sold a container for flowers for $80 that was found to be worth $18,000.And it says a painting it sold for $25 was later found to be worth $25,000.

  The store buys the luggage from the airlines.It does not examine the things inside them before buying them.Only about half of the items in the bags are suitable for sale at the store.

  Some people say it is not fair to the owners of the lost luggage to sell their goods.Customer Daniel Martin is not one of them.

  “I feel the airport may try to find the people that lose the things.If they’re tired and they can’t get a hold of them,it’s better than throwing them away or just letting them rot in a warehouse somewhere.”

  Shyness is the cause of much unhappiness for a great many people.Shy people are anxious and self-conscious;that is,they are concerned with their own appearance and actions too much.Negative thoughts are constantly occurring in their minds:What kind of impression am I making?Do they like me?Do I sound stupid?Am I wearing unattractive clothes?

  It is obvious that such uncomfortable feelings must affect people unfavorably.A person’s self-concept is reflected in the way he or she behaves and the way a person behaves affects other people’s reactions.In general,the way people think about themselves has a deep effect on all areas of their lives.

  Shy people,who have low respect,are likely to be passive and easily influenced by others.They need faith that they are doing “the right thing”.Shy people are very sensitive to criticism.It makes them feel inferior(自卑).They also find it difficult to be pleased by praises because they believe they are unworthy of praise.A shy person may respond to a praise with a statement like this one:“You’re just saying that to make me feel good,I know it’s not true.” It is clear that,while self-awareness is a healthy quality,overdoing it is harmful.

  Can shyness be completely got rid of,or at least reduced?Fortunately,people can overcome shyness with determination since shyness goes hand in hand with lack of self-respect.It is important for people to accept their weakness as well as their strengths.Each one of us has his or her own characteristics.We are interested in our own personal ways.The better we understand ourselves,the easier it becomes to live up to our chances for a rich and successful life.

  5.The first paragraph is mainly about .

  A.the cause of shyness

  A.harmful to people

  B.a weak point of shy people

  C.the cause of unhappiness

  D.a good characteristic

  7.What is the shy people’s reaction to praise?

  A.They are pleased by it.

  B.They feel it is not true.

  C.They are very sensitive to it.

  D.They feel they are worthy of it.

  8.We can learn from the passage that shyness can .

  A.block our chances for a successful life

  B.help us to live up to our full development

  C.enable us to understand ourselves better

  D.have nothing to do with lack of self-respect

  Does this situation seem familiar to you?Your English is progressing well,the grammar is now familiar,the reading comprehension is no problem,and you are communicating quite fluently. 1

  First of all,remember that you are not alone.Listening comprehension is probably the most difficult task for almost all learners of English as a foreign language.So,the most important thing is to listen as often as possible.

   2 The Internet is really a useful tool for English students.You can download The RealPlayer from RealMedia.com,which allows you to use the Internet like a radio station.

  Once you have begun to listen on a regular basis,you might still be frustrated by limited understanding. 3

  Here is some of the advice I give my students:

  Accept the fact that you are not going to understand everything.

  Keep cool when you do not understand—even if you continue not to understand for a long time.

   4 Don’t concentrate on details until you have understood the main idea.

   5 This approach usually results in confusion.Translating leads to a kind of block in one’s brain which sometimes doesn’t allow us to understand anything at all!

  By remaining calm,allowing yourself not to understand,and not to translate while listening,your brain is free to concentrate on the most important thing:understanding English in English.

  A.What should you do?

  B.But listening is STILL a problem.

  C.The next step is to find listening resources.

  D.Listen for the general idea of the conversation.

  E.Secondly,most people repeat themselves constantly.

  F.Do not translate everything into your native language.

  G.This situation leads to less—not more—understanding.

  Ⅲ.书面表达

  假如你是李华,你的同学们都能从父母那里得到零花钱,他们也会把钱用在不同的地方,请你就高中生如何正确使用零花钱谈谈自己的看法。

  1.零花钱的不同用途:买书、买零食、玩电脑游戏;

  2.父母挣钱不容易,正确使用零花钱能帮助自己学会理财;

  3.存一部分零花钱,捐给慈善机构。

  写作要求:1.词数:100左右;

  2.可适当增加细节,以使行文流畅。

  Ⅲ.One possible version:

  Almost every student in our class can get allowances from their parents but they spend the money on different things.

  Some hardworking students use it to buy practical things,such as books and pens.Others buy enjoyable things like snacks and CDs.But a few of them spend the money in playing computer games,which has caused great concern.

  From my point of view,it’s of importance to spend our allowances in the right way.Our parents earn money through their hard work,so we should be ashamed of ourselves if we are not aware of the fact.What is more,spending money wisely can help us learn how to manage money in the future.

  How about setting aside some of it?If so,we can help remove some pressure from our parents.Another good choice is to give some money away so that it can help those in need.
