(2024·贵州余庆中学模拟)Medical News Today reports a rise in the number of dogs trained to find out cancer,

  diabetic conditions,

bacterial infections, and other health problems.

Research from the UK charity Medical Detection Dogs and the US organization Dogs4Diabetes has found dogs are being used to warn their diabetic owners when their blood sugar levels are too low.

Other research has found dogs are able to find clostridium difficile (艰难梭菌) — a dirty bacterial infection that causes many illnesses acquired in hospitals — in patient stool samples and hospital air.

New research is also examining at the use of dogs to detect various types of cancer — named “biodetection dogs”. Earlier this year, Medical News Today detailed how researchers have found dogs are able to detect volatile organic compounds (VOCs), or odorants (有气味的东西), which are altered in the early stages of ovarian (卵巢的) cancer. Another study conducted by researchers at Medical Detection Dogs also found that these VOCs are biomarkers for bladder (膀胱) cancer.

Using four trained sniffer dogs to analyze urine (尿) samples from patients who had bladder cancer,

alongside healthy people, the researchers found that the dogs were able to detect the cancer with an accuracy level that ranged from 56 percent to 92 percent.

A dog has up to 300 million scent glands (嗅腺) (a human has about 5 million), which makes a dog's sense of smell up to 100,000 times more sensitive than people's.

“We believe all diseases have smell associated with the diseases, due to the changes occurring within the body, with different organs expressing different chemical compounds,” Ralph Hendrix, executive director of Dogs4Diabetics, told Medical News Today, “These smells are evident in breath and sweat.”

1.What does the passage mainly talk about?

  A.Trained dogs are very clever.

B.Trained dogs can find out diseases like cancer, diabetes and so on.

C.Dogs that are trained have a good sense of smell.

D.Dogs that are trained can follow the rules.

2.What can trained dogs do for diabetics?

A.They can remind diabetics when their blood sugar levels are too low.

B.They can help diabetics find doctors when their blood sugar levels are too low.

C.They can warn diabetics to take medicine when their blood sugar levels are too low.

D.They can take diabetics some food when their blood sugar levels are too low.

3.What does the fourth paragraph mainly want to say?

A.The accuracy rate of trained dogs detecting the cancer is high.

B.The accuracy rate of trained dogs detecting the cancer varies widely.

C.Trained dogs can only detect certain diseases.

D.It's very difficult to train dogs to find out diseases.

4.What's Ralph Hendrix's opinion according to the last paragraph?

A.He thinks dogs' smell influences patients' moods.

B.He thinks dogs' smell influences patients' behavior.

C.He believes the diseases have something to do with smell.

D.He believes the diseases have something to do with lifestyle.

Paul George has been making a lot of noise in 2024.

He was named NBA's Most Improved Player in Sept., 2024 for leading the Indiana Pacers to last season's Eastern Conference finals. On Dec. 3, 2024, he beat reigning (现任的) MVP LeBron James for the Eastern Conference Player of the Month title. And he has, thus far, received the second highest total of votes in the Eastern Conference, behind only James, for the 2024 NBA AllStar Game that kicked off on Feb. 16.

Last season he showed the extraordinary ability to be an emotional leader after the Pacers lost to Miami in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference finals.

“Be happy with what we have accomplished. But don't be satisfied,” he told his teammates.

  George hated losing that game.

Over the summer, he trained as hard as he ever had. According to Sports Illustrated, four days per week, George ran through the steep (陡峭的) Southern California hills. The memory of Game 7 pushed him the extra miles every day.

By Sept., 2024, George had improved his skills. The start of this season brought a stronger Indian team with a scoring genius, George, at the helm (掌舵).

“When you watch him play, he's not a yeller or a screamer ... He hits a big three, he dunks (扣篮), blocks somebody's shot, he gets a big steal ... His game speaks for him so much that he never has to be one of those guys that are in the media overtalking,” Scott Agness wrote for NBA. com.

Zach Buckley of Bleacher Report believes George is “passing all of his tests with_flying_colors”.

But the 23yearold doesn't just set his eyes on this season — he has his own ambitions. “I want to be MVP. I want to be a Defensive Player of the Year.

I want to be a champion. Everything that's the greatest. I want to do that,” he told Slam Magazine. Now in his fourth season, George already has the look of an MVP candidate.

Some even suggest that George will “dethrone (撵……下台) LeBron James” in the near future. “George isn't coming — he's here” Bleacher Report said.

5.What made Paul George practise harder over the summer than before?

A.Their team losing to Miami in Game 7.

B.That his teammates couldn't cooperate in the game.

C.That his teammates didn't listen to him.

  D.The changing weather.

6.What's the meaning of the underlined part “with flying colors” in the eighth paragraph?

  A.Occasionally. B.Carefully.C.Properly.

D.Successfully.7.What does the last but one paragraph mainly talk

  about?

  A.George's experience.

  B.George's achievements.

  C.George's ambitions.

  D.George's hard work.

8.What can we learn from Paul George's experience in 2024?

  A.Hard work will pay off.

  B.Every coin has two sides.

  C.Actions speak louder than words.

  D.Practice makes perfect.

I'm very glad to have received the letter you sent me last week. I have been thinking about the question you asked me. From my point of view, you can choose to come to China after finishing your studies.

For one reason, China's development over the past 30 years offers quantities of job opportunities for the young. What's more, what you are studying is badly needed in China nowadays.

In fact, many big companies in our city are

hoping to hire people like you.

For another reason, China is a country with so different cultures and traditions from the West that many foreigners enjoy living and working here. Why not come and join them? I'm sure you'll adapt to the environment quickly. If you come, I will do what I can to help you. So what are you waiting for?
