World No. 2 Roger Federer of Switzerland won the Madrid Masters 1000 with a victory in straight sets of 6-4 and 6-4 over Spain's Rafael Nadal, the world's number one. It is the second time Federer won the Madrid tournament, and his victory breaks 33-match winning streak by Nadal, who was visibly tired after a four-hour match versus Serbia's Novak Djokovic.

Federer has not beaten Nadal on clay since Nadal defeated him in the final of 2007's Hamburg masters. It was also Federer's first final since losing to Nadal at the Australian Open.

Next week, Federer will compete in Roland Garros, the only clay tournament he has never won, in which alongside Djokovic and Nadal, he is one of the top seeds. In the women's competition, Russia's Dinara Safina enjoyed a comfortable victory over Denmark's Caroline Wozniacki in straight sets of 6-2 and 6-4. It was Safina's second consecutive tournament victory and she is now the clear favorite to win Roland Garros.
